Design for children’s modular furniture

17. 05. 2012

Plastic table and plastic chairs – obligatory equipment for a kindergarten or children’s play area. A bit boring, you might think! We are introducing a design which is both furniture and a toy in one. Castles and dragons, tunnels, dens and Wendy houses – fantasy knows no bounds!

A whole children’s world that could be assembled from just four simple parts. This was the objective in mind of designers from the Institute of Machine and Industrial Design at BUT Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

ustav-konstruovani-fakulta-strojniho-inzenyrstvi-vut-brno-v11The kit consists of four components – two cubes and two half-cylinders. The smaller components fit inside the larger ones, which makes storage easier. The main dimensions of the individual parts were chosen so that they could be used as a small table and chairs. The parts can be also used as storage space for small items.

The designers have thought through all the details. In addition to the superb appearance, the kit can be justifiably proud of its functional aspects. The manufacturing method is not expensive, the materials used are easily available, hygienic and the insides are filled with foam, which reduces the weight of each part so children can easily carry the furniture by themselves. The colour details on parts are not only aesthetically pleasing, they also serve as a safety non-slip element. The safety of the youngest children was also taken in consideration by using rounded edges.

BUT has protected the design of the kit as an industrial designThe designers are Bc. Martin Cimbál, Bc. Martin Mahdal and Bc. David Rajchl, students of the BUT Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The design team was professionally supervised by Doc. Ladislav Křenek, ac. sculptor, ArtD..
