Department of Chemistry

We are dealing with chemistry and ecotoxicology of building materials, degradation processes of materials, chemistry of surface water and sediments, and waste water treatment.

The research is aimed at the study of properties of composites using secondary raw materials (alkali-activated waste aluminosilicate materials, FGD-gypsum, fly-ash, and slag), ecotoxicological assessment of risks associated with the use of secondary raw materials in building industry, historical binders and the research of their appropriate substitution, and corrosion of building materials. Another area is the determination of critical values of degradation effects acting on building materials, particularly on concrete composites: concrete carbonation, reinforcement corrosion, effect of chlorides. In the area of water management, we are dealing with hydrochemical assessment of water courses, problems of their
eutrophication, and biological waste water treatment, particularly nutrients removal.

What do we offer?

  • consultations in the area of building chemistry
  • implementation and evaluation of chemicaland physico-chemical diagnostic methods
  • proposal of composition of blends for plaster restoration of historic and other buildings
  • disorders of building materials from chemistry - degradation point of view
  • diagnostics and redevelopment proposal of damp buildings
  • design of solidification and stabilization of wastes
  • design of support structures at specific durability and reliability level: procedures, methods, and software tools
  • determination of critical values of degradation effects acting on building materials, particularly cement composites: concrete carbonation, reinforcement corrosion, effect of chlorides; modeling a prognosis of these phenomena; risk quantification
