Method of measuring damping ratio of unsprung mass of half axles of passenger cars using a suspension testing rig without disassembling

A condition of the Czech roads is not always the best, and our car so often suffer shock of driving over bumps. Shock absorbers are stressed a lot and their improper functionality can alter driving characteristics, eg. the braking distance. Therefore, it is necessary to periodically inspected shock absorbers at vehicle technical inspection. It can be done in several ways and for this purpose BUT offer a suspension testing rig without disassembling.

Description of the technology

The subject of invention is a method of measuring damping ratio of unsprung mass of half axle of passenger cars in order to assess the technical condition of the wheel suspension. The technology contains the necessary hardware and software equipment for testing procedure. The hardware is mobile suspension testing rig and software part contains original algorithm for assessment of the wheel pressure force.

The suspension testing rig without disassembling according to the invention is a simple mobile excitation unit with a reduced stroke as opposed to the stroke used in the EUSAMA methodology. The evaluation program corrects, by computation, the reduced stroke to determine the universally comparable criterion according to the EUSAMA prescription. It uses an additional criterion for the assessment of controversial situations: the coefficient of the damping ratio of the unsprung mass, calculated from the measured signal of the phase shift between the force and the excitation stroke.

Main advantages

  • Measurement of the wheel pressure force – criterion of safety
  • Simple and understandable way of assessment of the car suspension technical condition
  • Measurement is possible even in small workplaces
  • Mobile testing device

Intellectual property

  • Czech patent granted
  • European patent application in process
